Two different words that happen to be spelled the same. One is a summer afternoon on grass: white clothes, a bat, a ball, and three sticks behind the batter. The other is the small brown insect in the grass at night, sawing out one thin note over and over. Nothing links them but the spelling — so learn them as two separate words.

Etymonline lists these as two separate entries: the insect is attested from the early 14th century, from Old French criquet, of echoic (sound-imitating) origin; the game is from the 1590s, apparently from an Old French criquet meaning 'goal post, stick', perhaps from Middle Dutch/Middle Flemish cricke. Same modern spelling, different routes.
Etymonline 把它們列成兩個獨立的詞條：昆蟲那個十四世紀初就有了，來自古法文 criquet，屬於擬聲（模仿叫聲）而來；球類那個是十六世紀末才出現，來源看來是另一個古法文 criquet「柱子、棍子」，可能再往上接到中古荷蘭語／法蘭德斯語的 cricke。今天拼法一樣，來路不同。
