A creepy-crawly is a small crawling creature, especially an insect or spider that makes you flinch. Children use the word a lot, and adults use it when they want to sound light or when they feel a bit disgusted. It is homey and informal; a science page would say insect or spider instead. You can count them: one creepy-crawly, several creepy-crawlies. Though actually, people stretch it past true insects — spiders and other little things on many legs still get the name. The feeling in the word matters as much as the school label: a small thing that crawls and gives you the creeps.
