Picture a thin line of water cut into the land — narrow enough to jump across in places, winding away between trees or mud banks until you cannot see where it goes. A creek can be thought of as a small water passage into somewhere: too small to be a river, big enough to walk along, and easy to get into but not always easy to get out of.
