You can picture cost as what you must hand over to get something — most often money, but sometimes time, effort, or something you love. To get the thing, you have to give this up; that giving-up is the cost.

可以把 cost 想成「為了得到某樣東西，你必須交出去的代價」——最常見的是錢，但也可能是時間、力氣，或某個你珍惜的東西。想拿到那樣東西，就得放掉這個；放掉的這份，就是 cost。名詞講的是「要付出的量」，動詞講的是「（某物）讓你付出」。

From Latin constare 'to stand at (a price), be fixed', via Old French coster; the idea is what a thing 'stands you' — what you must give up to have it.

來自拉丁文 constare「（價格上）相當於、定在某個價」，經古法語 coster 進入英語。核心想法是「這東西要花你多少」——也就是你得交出什麼才能擁有它。
