A corniche is a road built along a coast, often along a cliff or a steep shore, with the sea on one side. People drive it for the view as much as to get somewhere. The word is French, and it still feels a little French in English: you meet it in travel writing and on maps more than in ordinary talk. Famous ones run along the Mediterranean. Though actually, it started as a word for a ledge — the same family of ideas as cornice, the strip along a wall. The road sits on a ledge of land above the water. Sometimes the Corniche is a proper name for one particular road.
