From Latin convictiō, from convictus, past participle of convincō "to prove guilty, prove wrong" (com- + vincō "to overcome"). The word names the finished act of overcoming doubt by proof — first in court, later also inside a person's own mind.
來自拉丁文 convictiō，源自 convincō（com- 加 vincō「戰勝」）——「用證據把懷疑打倒」。所以這個字最原始講的是法庭上那個「駁倒完畢」的結果；後來這個「懷疑被打倒」的畫面搬進了人的心裡，就變成了信念。這也解釋了為什麼「定罪」和「信念」看起來毫不相干，卻是同一個字：它們都是懷疑被打倒之後留下的東西。
