From Latin controversus 'turned against', from contra 'against' + versus (past participle of vertere 'to turn'): literally a matter people are turned against each other over. The modern 'causes strong disagreement' sense sits right on that image.

源自拉丁文 controversus「轉向對立」，由 contra（相對、對著）加 versus（vertere「轉」的過去分詞）組成，字面就是「大家為此轉身互相對峙」。今天「引起強烈爭議」的意思，正好落在這個畫面上。
