If you contort something, or if it contorts, it twists out of its usual shape and looks strange, even ugly. A face can contort with pain or anger. A body can contort as someone squeezes through a gap. People also stretch it to talk: he contorted the story means he twisted the truth until it looked different. That looser use turns up in news and argument. It is a fairly strong, slightly formal verb. In casual talk people more often say twist, screw up (for a face), or warp.
