A group of companies, banks, universities, or other organizations that join together to do a large job they probably could not do alone — build a railway, bid on a contract, share the cost of research. It is a business and news word, fairly formal. The members stay separate; they are not merging into one company. You would not call a group of a consortium. In newspapers you often see “a consortium of banks.” The plural is consortiums, or consortia in more formal writing.
