You can picture consensus as a whole group's heads slowly nodding toward the same answer: after talking it over, most people lean the same way. The Latin root con-sentire means 'to feel/think together' — not a vote that crushes the losers, but a shared sense the group can live with.

From Latin consensus 'agreement', from consentire 'to feel together', con- 'together' + sentire 'to feel, think' (the same root as in 'sense' and 'sentiment').
