Conscription is the system of making people join the army, navy, or similar service by law, not because they walked in and asked. The people taken are conscripts; the government conscripts them. News and history books use this word; in daily life people more often say they had to do military service or “go into the army.” It is not a hobby and not a class you sign up for. Countries argue about it: some keep it, some end it and use a volunteer army instead. It does not mean writing your name on a list for a newsletter — that trap is subscription, a different word that only looks related.
