One way to hold this word: a line drawn around something, and nothing crossing it. Draw the line close to your body and you get a confined space, where the walls are near enough to touch. Draw it around a town and you get a flood confined to that town. Draw it around a bed and you get a person confined to bed. The line is the same every time; what changes is what sits inside it, and how much room that leaves.
