    computing 指的不是電腦這台機器，而是「用電腦做事」這整件事：可以是一門學科（唸資訊）、一個行業（做資訊這一行），也可以是機構提供給大家用電腦的設備。可以想成 compute（計算）加上 -ing，把「用電腦處理事情」看成一個活動的整體，所以它不可數，不說 a computing、也不說 computings。要講機器本身時用 computer；要講「這個領域、這份工作」時才用 computing。

Think of 'working with computers' taken as one whole thing you can point at and name — not this laptop or that program, but the activity itself: what you do all day at that job, the industry made of everyone who does it, and the subject you sit down to study at school.

可以想成把「用電腦做事」整件事打包起來、給它一個名字——指的不是你手上這台筆電，也不是某個程式，而是那個活動本身。同一個字可以是你的工作（She works in computing 她做資訊這一行）、可以是一整個產業，也可以是學校課表上的一門科目。中文的「資訊」剛好也有這種伸縮性：既是行業，也是學科。
