Commiseration is the feeling of sympathy itself — or the words and faces that show it — when something unpleasant has happened to someone. “Please accept my commiserations” is a rather stiff, old-fashioned way to say “I’m sorry that happened.” You hear it after a loss, a defeat, or a job someone did not get. Though actually, in sport, people say “commiserations to the losing team” as a set phrase, even when they do not sound very sad. The feeling can be real and warm, or just polite.
