To commentate is to talk about a live event — usually sport — on television or radio while it is happening. You say what you see, explain the rules, and often give your view: who is playing well, why a team is losing. The person who does this is a commentator. Though actually, English made this verb rather late, by cutting it out of the noun commentator. Careful older speakers still prefer “give a commentary” or “be a commentator.” Sports TV uses commentate all the time now. You commentate a match or a race, not a quiet dinner.
