A commemoration is the thing you hold or make so that people remember and respect someone important, or an important day in the past. It can be a ceremony, a service, a monument, or a special event. It is the noun that sits next to commemorate: one is the doing, the other is the occasion or the marker. The word often sounds formal, the kind you see on an invitation or a plaque. Though actually, people also use it for the feeling of marking the day, not only for one official programme.
