Comfortingly means in a way that makes you feel less worried, unhappy, or upset. “She smiled comfortingly” means the smile was meant to calm you. You will also hear it before another word, as in comfortingly familiar: it feels safely known, in a way that eases you. That second use is quieter and a bit more grown-up; nobody is hugging anyone — the speaker is just naming a feeling of ease. It is an adverb of mood, not of the body. Comfortably is the one for chairs and shoes. Though actually, many people just say “in a comforting way,” which means the same and is easier to handle.
