Coleslaw is a cold salad of raw cabbage cut into very thin strips, usually mixed with a creamy dressing (often mayonnaise). In the US and UK it sits beside fried chicken, burgers, and picnic food. People often stir in carrot, a little onion, vinegar, or sugar; the cabbage itself is not cooked. In Taiwan you will see it with Western meals and in some fried-chicken shops — same idea, sometimes a lighter dressing. Though actually, American English often shortens it to just slaw. There is no coal in the bowl: the cole piece is an old cabbage word that came in through Dutch.
