A coating is a thin layer of something that covers a surface. Chocolate on a , sugar on a pill, paint on metal, dust on a table — each of those layers is a coating. Factories put coatings on tools to stop rust; cooks give food a coating of flour or before frying. The word can also name the action: coating the chicken in . It is not the garment called a coat, though the idea to cover is the same. In careful talk, a coating is thin; a thick covering is more often a layer or a covering.
