Cliffhanging describes that same kind of situation: a story, film, or competition that keeps you and nervous because you do not yet know how it will end. We usually set it in front of a noun — a cliffhanging finish, a cliffhanging episode. It is the describing form of cliffhanger, built from the same picture of someone hanging from a cliff with their fate still open. Sports reporters love it for a match that could still go either way. The wait is the point; there is almost never a real cliff.
