Picture the moment water touches a baby's head and someone says the name out loud. From that moment the name is hers. Every other use of christen can be seen as that moment lent out: to a new ferry, to a nickname the fans start shouting, to an oven used for the first time, even to the first spill on a new shirt. What they share is a beginning that somebody marks — the point at which a thing is officially called something, or officially in use.

From the word’s history

The packet traces christen to Old English cristnian 'to christen, baptise', from cristen (Christian), and notes that by surface analysis it is Christ + -en. So the church ceremony is where the word starts, and the naming, the first use and the joking first spill all sit downstream of it.
