To add your words to a conversation that other people are having — a comment, an answer, a 'me too'. Often without being asked, but it usually sounds friendly, not rude; in meetings people even invite it: 'feel free to chime in'. No object; use 'with' for what you add: 'she chimed in with an idea'.
