Picture the whole stretch of years when you were still a child — not one memory, but the entire period, looked back on from further along. That is why the word almost always appears in the past tense, with things attached to it: a friend from then, a home from then.

可以想成：你還是小孩的那整段年月——不是某一個回憶，而是整個時期，通常是從後來的位置回頭看的。所以這個字幾乎都跟過去式一起出現，也常常掛著別的東西：那時候的朋友、那時候的家。字尾 -hood 的作用就是把一個身分（child）變成「處在那個身分的時期」，同一組還有 adulthood、motherhood。
