    a printed piece of paper that you write an amount of money on and sign, and then use instead of cash to pay someone or to give them money.

    「cheque」是一張印好的紙，你在上面寫下金額、簽名，再交給對方——對方拿去銀行就能領到那筆錢。可以想成「一張代替現金的紙」：先寫金額、簽名（write out / sign a cheque），再交出去或用它付錢（give / pay by cheque），最後由銀行把它換回錢（cash a cheque）。注意 cheque 本身不是錢，是「可以換成錢的紙」，所以要拿去銀行才拿得到現金。

Picture a small printed slip of paper: you write a number on it, write who it is for, sign your name, and hand it over. The paper itself is worth nothing — it is an instruction to your bank to move that amount of your money to that person. Paper standing in for cash.
