chef is short for French chef de cuisine, 'head of the kitchen'; chef itself means 'head, chief', from Latin caput 'head'. So a chef is literally the head of the kitchen — the same root that gives English chief.

chef 是法文 chef de cuisine（廚房的頭）的縮寫，chef 本身就是「頭、首領」的意思，源自拉丁文 caput（頭）——和英文 chief（首領）同一個根。所以主廚字面上就是「廚房之首」。
