A cessation is a pause or a stop — the moment something ceases. News and official writing like it: a cessation of fighting, a cessation of work, help with the cessation of smoking. It is a formal noun; in speech people more often say stop, ending, or giving up. It can be a short break or a longer halt, depending on the situation — the word itself does not tell you whether the thing will start again. Though actually, in peace talks “cessation of hostilities” is a careful, legal-sounding way of saying “the shooting stops,” which may or may not be a full peace.
