A ceasefire is an agreement to stop fighting for a time. It does not mean the war is over — though people often talk as if it does. It means the guns go quiet, usually so both sides can talk, move hurt people, or try to write a longer peace. News and governments use this word a lot. In everyday talk people also stretch it a little, as when two angry friends “call a ceasefire” at the dinner table; that is a joke use. The serious use is about war, or a hard fight between groups that is not quite a war. You will also see it written cease-fire; same thing.
