Careerism is putting your job-path above everything else — friends, rest, fairness, even the work itself — so that getting ahead is the real point. People use it with a : it suggests a person or a workplace hungry for rank and pay, not for the job well done. It is a formal, slightly newspaper-ish noun. In ordinary talk someone might just say they are only in it for the promotion. The person is a careerist; careerism is the habit or the attitude.
