A callus is a thick, hard patch of skin. Your body grows it to protect a place that keeps rubbing — a heel in new shoes, a palm from a or a shovel. It is not usually an open sore; it is extra skin, often yellowish and less sensitive than the skin beside it. The plural is calluses. Though actually, doctors also use callus for the new tissue that forms while a broken bone is healing, and use it for healing tissue on a cut plant. For most , the skin on hands and feet is the meaning you will meet. Do not mix it with callous, the word for an uncaring person.
