Picture handing over money and getting something back: 'buy' is that exchange — you pay, and the thing becomes yours. Almost every other use is this same trade with the goods swapped out: instead of an object you might 'buy' time, or a belief, or a person's loyalty, or pay a heavy cost for a gain. The noun side simply freezes the act into a thing — 'a buy' is either the deal you made or the bargain worth making.
