A name that keeps being handed on. A place in eastern France gave its name to the wine made there, and the wine gave its name to its own colour. Recorded from 1881, from the attributive use of Burgundy in Burgundy wine, which in turn is from Burgundy, the region of France. So the order is place, then wine, then colour.
