In stories, a broomstick is the broom a witch flies on. It has a long wooden handle and a bunch of thin sticks tied at one end — the same shape as an old broom for sweeping the floor. In everyday life, broomstick can also just mean the stick part of a broom, though actually the meaning you meet in books and films is almost always the flying one. Children know it from Halloween and from tales. Nobody in the real world flies on one; it is story-magic. The word is simply the two pieces said as one thing.
