A bridesmaid is a girl or woman who stands with the bride on the wedding day and helps her. Traditionally she was , though that old rule is softer now. There is often more than one; the one closest to the bride may be called the maid of honour in American English, or chief bridesmaid in British English. The word is friendly and ordinary. People also joke “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” about someone who comes close to a prize but never wins — sports writers use it that way. That stretch still starts from this wedding picture: near the centre, but not the one in the dress.
