You use breathtakingly when something is so impressive, , or surprising that it almost stops your breath. A view can be breathtakingly beautiful. A climb can be breathtakingly steep. Though actually it is not only praise: a price can be breathtakingly high, and a mistake can be breathtakingly silly. It marks how extreme the thing is, so hard it hits you. It feels a little strong and a little written — travel talk, reviews, news — more than quiet chat about the weather. It does not describe lungs. It describes the shock or wonder.
