A breather is a short stop so you can rest, especially when your body has been working hard — running, climbing, carrying boxes. You do not ‘breather’; you take a breather or have a breather. Though actually it is not only for sport. People take a breather from a long meeting, from homework, from a noisy kitchen. It is friendly, everyday English, a little informal. A five-minute breather is a very small rest, not a holiday. The -er here does not mean ‘a person who breathes’, even though -er often means that. It names the short rest itself.
