A breastplate is a piece of armour — leather or metal — worn over the chest by soldiers in old battles, so a sword or arrow would hit the plate instead of the body. Knights wore one as part of a full suit. Breast here again means the chest, so men wore breastplates too; it is not a piece of women's clothing. Though actually, the word still lives in a couple of smaller uses: a strap on a horse that stops the saddle sliding back is also called a breastplate, and very old church language uses it for a ceremonial piece on the chest.
