A blowtorch is a small hand tool that makes a very hot, narrow flame. Gas comes out of the nozzle; you light it; and the flame is hot enough to take old paint off wood or metal, to rusted parts, to join metal, or to melt sugar on a dessert. Builders, repair people, and some cooks use it. It is a practical workshop word, not a fancy one. People also use it as a verb: if you blowtorch something, you turn that flame on it. Though actually, in everyday talk it is still mostly the name of the tool, and it is a serious flame — not a toy, and not the little light some students call a torch.
