Hold one colour in mind: a pale, washed-out gold, closer to straw or to light wood than to bright yellow. Everything else is that colour being pointed at different things. Point it at hair and you get blond hair; point it at the person wearing that hair and he is blond, or she is a blond; point it at the colour on a card in a salon and you get six shades of blond. One pale gold, aimed in different directions.

Borrowed from Middle French blond, going back to a Frankish word *blund meaning a mixed colour between golden and light brown, from a Germanic root related to blend. The mixed, in-between quality in the old word matches the modern colour, which is never a pure bright yellow.
