A birthmark is a mark on the skin that is already there when a baby is born — a patch of colour, a spot, sometimes a little raised. It stays. It is not a from a bump, and it is not a mole that appears years later, though in casual talk people do mix later marks with this word. English once had other names (people said a mother's mark); birthmark is the normal word now. Doctors have extra names for different kinds, but everyday English is happy with this one word.
