Birthday is built straight out of birth + day — the day you came into the world, coming round again each year on the same date. Hold that picture: a yearly marker that points back to a beginning. From a person's own beginning, the same idea stretches to the 'birth' of a club or an event, and even jokes its way into 'birthday suit.'
