Picture the single moment a baby comes out of its mother's body and starts its own life — that first instant of a new living thing in the world. 'Birth' can be thought of as that moment of coming-into-being. From this one image the word stretches two ways: it points back at the act that makes it happen (a mother giving birth), and it lifts off the body to mark the start of anything new — an idea, a country, a movement — being 'born'. It also looks at the family you came out of: where your life began.
