Betrayal is the act of : turning against someone who had reason to trust you. That may be a country (giving its secrets to an enemy), a friend (telling what you were asked to keep), or a partner (breaking a promise of love). The sting is not only the harm; it is that a bond was used against the person who offered it. You can speak of a betrayal of trust, a betrayal of a cause, or a feeling of betrayal even when nobody sat down to be cruel. It is a strong, serious word. Everyday small is not usually called betrayal unless trust sat at the centre.
