Picture the room after a funeral, and look at who is still standing in it. Bereaved points at them — the people left behind, not the person who has gone. That is the one thing to hold on to, because it is the part most often reverse. The word does not say how those people feel; it says what has happened to them. From that single picture the word does two jobs: it can describe those people, and, with the in front of it, it can simply name them.
