Bedtime is the time of day when you usually go to bed. Parents say ‘It’s bedtime’ to children; a child can have a bedtime of eight o’clock, a bedtime story, or a bedtime routine (wash, teeth, lights out). It names a habit, not a length of sleep and not a time printed on the clock for everyone. Adults use it too, often lightly: ‘That’s past my bedtime’ means ‘later than I like to stay up.’ You can also talk about bedtime as a kind of atmosphere — quiet, lamps on, the day closing — not only the exact minute you lie down.
