Think of basics as the bottom layer you put down before anything else goes on top of it. A subject has one: the few facts and moves that everything harder leans on. A life has one too: the few things a person cannot do without. The picture is the same on both sides — put these down first, and the rest has somewhere to stand.
basics 可以想成蓋東西時最先鋪下去的那一層。一門學問有這一層：那幾個最基本的事實和動作，後面比較難的東西全都壓在上面。一個人的生活也有這一層：那幾樣少了就過不下去的東西。兩邊其實是同一個畫面——先把最底下那幾樣放好，其他才有地方站。也因為這樣，英文裡這個字幾乎只用複數：它指的從來不是一樣東西，而是一小組。
