A balm is a soft, substance you rub on your skin to make it feel better, to soothe pain, dryness, or a small injury, like lip balm for dry lips. Beyond the skin, 'a balm' is also used for anything that comforts or soothes a painful feeling: her kind words were a balm to his broken heart means her words made his sadness feel better, the same way a balm soothes skin.
