Picture two things already lined up with each other: a person here, and something further along the road that is certainly coming. Await names the gap between them. Unlike wait, it never takes 'for' — the thing being waited for sits straight after the verb, as if it were already in reach.
可以想成：畫面裡有兩個東西已經對上了——這邊是人，路的前方是一件確定會來的事，await 講的就是中間那段距離。它跟 wait 最大的差別在句型：await 後面直接接受詞，不加 for（We await your reply，不是 await for your reply），好像那件事已經在手邊了一樣。另外它屬於正式用語，多半出現在書面或公告裡。
