Avoidance is the act of keeping away from someone or something. You can speak of avoidance of a person you do not want to see, or avoidance of a hard question. In money talk, tax avoidance means using the rules to pay less tax. That is not the same as tax evasion, which breaks the law — though actually people mix the two, and newspapers sometimes use the softer word when they mean the harder one. In everyday English it can also mean a habit of backing away from trouble. The word itself is a little formal; in speech people often just say keeping away or not facing it.
