An aviator is a person who flies a plane — a pilot. The word sounds a little old and proud, the kind you hear in history books, war films, or on a medal. In ordinary talk today people say pilot. Though actually newspapers and the army still like aviator, and sunglasses called “aviators” are named after the look of old flying glasses, not after a different job. It is not a child’s everyday word, and it is not the machine itself; the machine is the aircraft.
