One way to picture autocracy: a long table with only one chair. Every decision leaves from that chair, and there is nowhere else in the room to sit. The word is not really about what the person in the chair is like. It is about the missing chairs.
autocracy 可以想成一張長桌，桌邊只有一把椅子。所有決定都從那把椅子發出來。房間裡沒有第二個位子，也沒有人可以說不。這個字講的不是坐在上面的人好不好，而是旁邊少了什麼——少了選票，少了制衡，也少了讓他起身的辦法。auto- 是「自己」，-cracy 是「統治」，字面正好就是「一個人的統治」。
